Getting in shape

I've not done any serious exercise since I left school almost 4 years ago. Between my hours spent glued to various computer monitors, and my overindulgence in takeaways*, I've fallen more than a little out of shape.

So starting today I've decided to commit to doing 100 push ups a day. Of course the hardest part is always keeping it up after the first few days, and since this kind of thing is usually easier if you have people doing it with you I was wondering if anybody on here would be interested in joining in?

Just do 100 push ups (or 200 sit ups/30 chin ups if you prefer) every day and post about your progress. You don't need to do them all in one go (in fact I'd be very impressed if you could) space them out and take breaks whenever needed. If you feel 100 is too many, or want to try for more as a challenge feel free to adjust the numbers.

No pressure, I just thought this might be more fun with company :)

*Thanks to my hungryhouse.co.uk online ordering history I can tell you I've eaten 83 pizzas/curries/kababs over the past year

Your math is flawed. You spend many of those hours sleeping.

I've done sweet F. A.

However, I did check my BMI yesterday, and found myself to be actually quite close to being underweight. Though this does not mean I'm in shape at all, I found it surprising.

Body mass index, use's your height and weight to calculated if your under weight, the right weight or over weight, it's kinda useful but it's a bit broke :P it doesn't factor in where the weights coming from ie fat or muscle

Excuses, excuses.

Blackadder tried it, measured his height using a computer mouse's height as a reference (he's apparently 3" 9), used weight measurements that were outdated, and found his BMI to be 75, which means he ought to be dead by now.

My elbow is starting to really hurt when I put weight on it, so I'm switching to sit ups for a little while untill it feels better.

Never rough yourself up when lifting weights. Perfect form and a nice steady pace are the key factors in any great and safe work out routine.

I actually did something! Something akin to 100 push-ups and 100 crunches.

If anyone can't best an old man who can do that then there's no hope for you.

Now comes the sticking to it bit...

It's been a fortnight now. How's everyone doing?

Personally I find it encouraging that I've gone from doing my 100 in batches of 10 and 20 to batches of 50. Hopefully I'll be doing them them all in one go before too long.

Aside from that, this looks like a fun challenge so I going to try it starting Sunday:
100 press ups
100 sit ups
5 minutes doing plank and horse stance (each)
