Battlefield 3 - Known MP Features

Post by lionheart_1 » 21 Aug 2011, 03:55

Image
Overview
-Conquest, Rush and Team Deathmatch are confirmed multiplayer modes

-MP maps will include large open environments and dense urban ones too

-Tanks, helicopters and aircraft will be available in various MP maps

-MP matches will have a total of 24 players on console, and 64 players on the PC version

-There will be tactical destruction of environments. Eg. Someone is hiding behind a wall. You can blow it up, taking away their cover. Lights can be shot to make areas darker.

-Will utilise the Frostbite 2 engine

-Dog tags can now be personalised, and can be taken from other players by a knife kill. However, knife kills can only be made by taking out your target from behind.

Classes

Image

-Battlefield 3 multiplayer will feature 4 different classes.
  • Assault - Carries an assault rifle as a primary weapon, and has been merged with the Medic class, so Assault can now heal and revive teammates. The med kits and defibrilators can be swapped out for more gunplay abilities.
  • Support - Provides heavy fire from a Light Machine Gun (eg M249 SAW), and resupply allies with ammunition. LMGs can also be deployed on bipods anywhere by zooming in with your LMG when prone, or when standing/kneeling in front of suitable supports, such as a window sill. This will provide a massive boost in accuracy and recoil reduction. It also provides suppressive fire. When firing in close vicinity to an enemy, the incoming barrage will show up as a graphical blur effect on their screen, letting him know that it's no longer safe to poke their head out. Their accuracy will also suffer.
  • Engineer - In charge of making repairs to vehicles, and engaging enemy armour with a rocket launcher or anti-tank mine. Carbines are their primary weapon.
  • Recon - Armed with a sniper rifle, the scope is ideal for spotting enemies across the battlefield. Recon can also call in artillary strikes and use C4 to blow up enemy vehicles or map objectives
Unlocks and Rewards
-Battlefield 3 will have 10 times the hardware unlocks spread over weapons, weapon attachments, gadgets and vehicles compared to Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

-Medals, ribbons and service stars will be awarded to players for their skill, commitment and team playing skills.

-Skill-driven rewards will be handed out as ribbons. Players can get more than once ribbon in a single round.
BF3_2D00_Ribbons_2D00_2.png
-Commitment honours are awarded as medals, and are typically awarded at specific milestones in your career.
BF3_2D00_Medals_2D00_4.png
-Using a certain gun will get you more upgrades for that gun. Same goes for using a kit or vehicle. All XP earned also goes towards your overall rank, resulting in unlocking more weapons, specialisations, and camoflagues that are usuable by any class.

Server Info
Quoted from Mikael Kalms (DICE) on the EA UK Battlefield 3 Forums (23/8/11)
Spoiler! :
RSPs

The game server machines themselves will be run by a number of Ranked Server Provider (RSP) companies. We do not allow other companies to run game servers, or for other people to run game servers from home.
We try to strike a balance where there are game servers available across the globe, while still keeping the number of RSPs at a level where we can offer reasonable support to each individual company. Since we prefer to work with larger hosting companies, and we focus on countries where we have a larger player base, there will not be game servers available in every country on the planet.
The list of RSPs which will run BF3 game servers at launch is not ready yet. Once it is, we will publilalalala widely.

Server administrators

While the RSPs run the physical machines, most if not all will be paid for and administered by the players themselves – individuals, groups of friends, or clans.
A server administrator control some aspects of the play experience – which maps are being played, which people are allowed onto the server, and can also affect the play style through various direct and indirect controls. Generally speaking, servers that are administered by reasonable admins attract players, while servers which have arbitrary rules imposed see less traffic.

Ranked vs Unranked

One of the biggest choices which a server administrator has to make is, whether to run the server in Ranked or Unranked mode.
In Ranked mode, player progression is tracked on EAs master servers. Weapons are unlocked by playing the game. Player progression is also visible on Battlelog. The server administrators will have to abide by the Battlefield Rules of Conduct.
In Unranked mode, player progression is not tracked on the master servers. Server administrators have free reign on such servers – no Battlefield Rules of Conduct to heed. They can control in detail which weapons are available to the players, etc. This mode is suited to playing clan matches, tournaments, or to those players who just like the fairness of everyone having the same range of weapons available to them.

PunkBuster

BF3 will use PunkBuster as its anti-cheat system. Game servers that run in ranked mode are required to have PunkBuster active.
There have been problems with the PunkBuster screenshot mechanism under DirectX 10/11 in the past. However, we have collaborated with EvenBalance to make screenshots function reliably with DX10/DX11 in BF3.

Third party anti-cheat organizations

There are several community initiatives against cheating. These initiatives are usually volunteer organizations that maintain their own databases with cheaters. They do both manual work - reviewing screenshots, game recordings, and other cheating evidence – and also implement automated systems.
It is up to each individual server administrator whether to join with one or more of these organizations.

While not officially partnering with these organizations, we try to ensure that BF3 works well with their systems in time for the launch.
The biggest three organizations that support Battlefield games are PBBans (PBBans | Always Quality over Quantity), GGC-Stream (GGC-Stream / News) and PunksBusted (PunksBusted.com Sponsored by Ventrilo). There are also several smaller organizations around.

Server administration interface

BF3 will support a Remote Administration interface similar to that of BFBC2. The basic protocol will be the same, but commands differing a bit.
There is a plethora of tools available that can talk to the remote admin interface. We are in contact with several of the developers who created tools for BFBC2, and will aid them in adding support for BF3. If you have developed a BFBC2 remote admin tool which is popular (used on >100 game servers), send me a PM.
The protocol itself is still under constant revision. Expect the protocol to be published by the time that the retail game is released.

Ranked vs unranked

On ranked servers, your rank controls which weapons/attachments you have available to you. As you play, you go up in rank and unlock new weapons/attachments.

On unranked servers, it is up to the server admin whether the players' rank should control which weapons each player has available (plus any preorder incentives), or whether all players should have the same, customized list of weapons available to them. In the latter case, players can have access to weapons which are above their current rank.

RSPs

We do currently not support any others than RSPs running game servers. No GSPs outside of the RSP program; no home game servers. Yes, we have noticed that there are people requesting this.

Game server pricing

This is largely up to the RSPs themselves. Our measurements so far indicates that a BF3 server requires considerably more CPU power per player than BFBC2 does.

Rules of Conduct, Spectator Mode, Battlerecorder

I will not comment on these at this point.

Oh, I'm not going to edit as this post has a greatly different slant than that one ^

I got my OXM360 today, with a 12 page special on... BF3 Vs CoD: MW3 Thus I'm going to post some info from that which may not be up there, including their verdict...

'The Essentials'
Spoiler! :
BF3 -
Launch Date - October 25th
Dev - DICE
Made in - Stockholm Sweden
Engine - Frostbite 2.0
Frame Rate - 30fps
Storyline - Near-future Middle-East Kerfuffle goes international. With 'quakes!
Setting - Iran, Iraq, France, USA and more... (If there's no Britain, I'll be pissed!)
Confirmed Landmarks - Paris Stock Exchange and Metro System
Social Network - Battlelog
The gunplay is described as improved - the weapons feel meatier - and it's stated that it feels a bit like CoD as it's been 'shined' and tweaked. ('The basic gunplay is all so shiny that out brain keeps being temporarily tricked into thinking we're playing Call of Duty.')

Tank warfare has been promised to be on a scale '...we've never seen before'.

Almost as a counter to the 'Prestige' system, BF3 has it's own increased challenge. Once you've reached Colonel (top rank it seems) XP will go towards earning service stars for individual pieces of kit. Each time you get a kill the desceased will see how many you've earned with each section of your current load-out. The ultimate challenge is to get 100 service stars for every item in the game. Good luck!

The co-op MP is tied in with the SP universe, with a 'light narrative'. The aim is to have scenarios you can revisit in order to get better and better scores. (One mission is described here, I won't because it'll be too long)

The graphics engine is described in woirds making it out to be better than the MW3 engine described mere mm away...

Battlelog = Entirely free!

Penultimately: Which is for you - CoD or BF3?
Spoiler! :
1 - How do you like to play shooters?
A - Alone mostly, but sometimes in a team.
B - All lone Wolf, All the time!
C - I'd be nowhere without my section battle drills and team work!
2 - How do you feel about variety?
A - Just stick to the shooty-bangs, thanks!
B - Did someone just say tanks?
C - A little here and there is nice.
3 - How much time do you play for?
A - I've got hours to learn, load me up!
B - Regularily, but not for long
C - Usually I just pop on for a quick game.
4 - Do you think first, or shoot first?
A - What, there's an OPTION?
B - Always wait 'till the time is right...
C - Take no chances... FIRE GODDMANIT, FIRE!
5 - Why do you play online shooters?
A - Because I want to be the best
B - Because I want to have fun
C - Because TV is rubbish...

Scores -

1 - A=2 B=1 C=3
2 - A=1 B=3 C=2
3 - A=3 B=2 C=1
4 - A=2 B=3 C=1
5 - A=1 B=3 C=2

A score of 5 = MW3 is best for you.
A score of 10 = Balanced.
A score of 15 = BF3 is best!
Finally - OXM UK's Verdict!

'Everyone loves a dramatic showdown, but we've got room in our hearts for two online shooters. The pair have their similarities, but the itches they scratch couldn't be further apart! Relying on speedy reactions and finely honed skills, MW3's fast-paced action is the gaming equivalent of playing Cowboys and Indians: immediately fun, loudly brash and just a little bit silly. By comparison, BF3's sandpit of possibilities is a love letter to those who prefer to think before they shoot. It's a choice between Hollywood spectacle or staggering scale...'
'Dum-dums we ain't!'

didnt you hear they've been working on balancing the LMG? i think they do less damage but have Suppressing Fire (makes people's screens go wibbly if you shoot a lot near them.)

well they nerfed the M60 last time after it turned out to be godlike...

What, why use the M60?

I use the XM8LMG... LIKE A BOSS! Yes, I know it is statistically exactly the same as the MG36 but without a red dot as standard...

EDIT: And I thought all weapons could surpress, to greater or lesser degrees of efficiancy.

But still...

I could only last 20 if it was:

0 - Bus reaches bus stop from school
5 - I reach my house
15 - I've opened the box, gone 'wow', unpacked, got changed out of uniform and gotten a drink
17 - finished booting it up
19:55 - finished the tut
20 - thrown it out the window...
'Dum-dums we ain't!'

So wait, players have to pay for other companies to host the server? I think that's what it's saying, right?

yeah but its a good compromise for having them at all.

and the system they have for Admins looks flexible and good to use :)
