HAVOC - A game I developed in 2010

Post by luke2006 » 01 Jun 2011, 01:50

HAVOC 1.0

This is a game I started working on in August 2010, though I haven't done any work on it since late November and it's a project that will undoubtedly remain unfinished. However, it was the last real game development project I worked on, and I was hoping I could get some feedback.
Also, don't expect Halo or even Minecraft quality - this was made by me and me only in a fairly short time period, and it's not exactly commercial quality. Still, I'm pretty proud - it's probably the best game I've made.
Unfortunately, the screenshots I have are too wide and I already uploaded the large ones, but there are links to them.

OK, so a bit of background: This is a arena-based top down shooter - you can play tonnes of team and FFA (up to 8 teams and a total of 16 players) game types (currently Deathmatch, Victim and Domination) on tonnes of user created maps (there's an advanced map editor so you can create and share your own battle fields, as well as 12 default maps to start with).

FEATURES
-Destructible terrain - tear down the arena bit by bit, bullet by bullet, explosive by explosive. Create new entries, exits and cover, and destroy the walls that your enemy's are hiding behind.
-Map Editor - create your own battlefields easily with the new, updated map editor! Place strong and weak walls, fences and spawn points.
-Arsenal of 8 unique weapons - Assault Rifle, Sniper Rifle, Sub Machine Gun, Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Flame Thrower, Akimbo Handguns and Machine Pistol+Riot Shield, each completely different and with detailed animations.
-Advanced AI - supports allies, takes cover, selects the best target, completes the objectives and so on!
-Tonnes of effects - muzzle flash, spent rounds, debris, blood, bullet trails, explosions, smoke, and more!
-Support for up to 8 teams - for huge, chaotic, team and free-for-all battles!

A Team Deathmatch game on Storage. I'm picking off guys with the sniper rifle.
http://img38.imagefra.me/i3b2/nd4spd/11ir_25a_ubes7.png
A Free-for-All Domination game on Corridors. I'm dead, waiting to respawn.

DOWNLOAD
http://host-a.net/ND4SPD/HAVOC.zip
The file is just 1.2mb, and the .zip contains havoc.exe (the game), readme.txt, help.txt (please READ those, they have all the controls and things), and tonnes of maps.

Thanks everyone! Hope you enjoy it!

HAVOC 2.0

Due to popular demand, I'm getting started on a 3D multiplayer sequel to HAVOC. There will be a big focus on customisation - weapon and equipment customisation, map editing, etc. The world will be a voxel world, with a relatively simple graphical style (similar to the 2D version of HAVOC).

For weapons, a hesitant preliminary list has emerged:
Assault Rifle - fires a 3 round burst;
Battle Rifle - single shot semi-auto; the marksman weapon of the game;
Submachine Gun - full auto weapon light-weight weapon;
Heavy Machine Gun - full auto weapon; perhaps needs to be 'mounted' before firing
Pump-Action Shotgun - chick chick BOOM; reload one by one; buckshot or slugs
Rapid-Fire Shotgun - as above, but at a higher tempo;
Akimbo Weapons - select two weapons; any combinations of a Handgun, Revolver, Machine Pistol, Sawn-Off Shotgun;
There could potentially also be a riot shield (in combination with a Handgun, Revolver, Machine Pistol or Sawn-Off Shotfun), a Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle, a Crossbow, a Grenade Launcher, a Flame Thrower, or any other suggestion.

Weapons will also have attachments for a number of slots. Generally, the slots will be Sight (Reflex Sight, Iron Sight, Telescopic Sight, Thermal Sight, Laser Sight), Magazine (Extended Magazine, Dual Magazine, JSP Magazine, FMJ Magazine, Magazine w/ Tracers, Buckshots, Slugs), Barrel (Foregrip, Muzzle Brake, Suppressor, Sling, Grenade Launcher, Breaching Shotgun, Extended Barrel).

And also, you'll be able to get some equipment (this will be the under-barrel grenade launcher/shotgun if you've selected it as a weapon attachment). Equipment include HE Grenades, Stun Grenades, Flash Grenades, Smoke Grenades, Remote Explosives, Triggered Explosives (i.e. trip mine), and possibly Medikits, Body Armour + Helmet, etc.

If you have any ideas for weapons, attachments, equipments, features, game types, the world editor, customisation, etc, please post suggestions!!

I'll download this when I get to another computer. Do you have any plans to introduce multiplayer? We could have an official Escapecraft battle! :D

Thanks for playing, everyone!

If I introduced multiplayer, I'd remake the game completely to be honest. Would you guys like to see a remake? Any other features you'd like to see in game? And can anyone help out with sound and graphics?

What do you mean by hazards? And explosive barrels are pretty sweet, nice idea!
Do you think just normal, realistic weapons, or also some random ones (think Red Faction, like the magnet gun or rail gun or something).

Impressive work! BTW, what program is used to create the maps and characters, etc?

I say you make lots of real weapons, and I have no clue if it's possible but maybe an upgradable system. Or maybe a weapon shop where you can buy a better gun. I could help with graphics if you ever code up a re-make.
It needs to be about, 20% cooler.

Uhh, I used GM for the whole game. It's all code (called GML). Thanks!

That's definitely possible.

Do you want to post some samples of your work?

Samples of art you've done, preferably 2D graphics. Perhaps if you want to have a go at spriting a top down character with, say, a rifle?

Its a pretty well put together game, the Loadouts are all balanced, i found myself never sticking to one class, and the AI is pretty good. in my opinion it is a pretty good game.

i think it needs special abilities that you unlock in game, like advanced armour, explosive bullets, camouflage, and maybe some killstreak type things like being able to summon an advanced weapon like a minigun, or a tank.

So, customisation needs to be improved a lot?

I was thinking air strikes could be kill streaks?

How much character customisation can you have in a top down perspective...?

Or do you mean weapon customisation?

Hats, eyes, helmets.

Hell, if weapon costumisation is an option toss it in there too! people Loooooove giving themselves something to look different.

You know what makes minecraft 30% cooler ( or any game for that fact )? The fact I can costumize my own skin 8-) Seperates me from the rest of the flamingos in the pack.

I still don't get how you're supposed to have character customisation in top down... weapon customisation foshizzle, though. I'm not sure how to implement it, but. I was thinking:

Every weapon has attachment slots, and you have a choice for each slot. For example, the assault rifle:
Sight (Iron Sight, Reflex Sight, ACOG), Barrel attachment (Under-barrel Shotgun/Grenade Launcher (that would become your equipment), Foregrip, Suppressor, Barrel Extention), Magazine (Normal, FMJ, Tracer).
The pistols would have less choice: (Barrel (Suppressor), Magazine (Normal, Extended, FMJ, Tracer).
You'd be able to unlock attachments with Unlock Points or XP something.

The alternative is to have a tonne of weapons:
Assault Rifle
Assault Rifle Carbine
Battle Rifle
Sniper Rifle
SMG
LMG
Assault Shotgun
Rapid-Fire Shotgun
Double-Barrel Shotgun
Pistol
Revolver
Machine-Pistol
Grenade Launcher
Flame Thrower
