Indie

Post by moimanticore » 26 Jan 2011, 04:21

Is it just me or did Indie games have a very important role in 2010?
We had Minecraft, Amnesia, Limbo,,, etc. These noted here all won prizes against big developers, a big feat when you only have 10% of their budget.

Games are getting better and better and even small time companies can now create best sellers that rule their genre, this might be because even though the smaller companies have less hardware and people they have a stronger idea of the game they want to create, unlike other studios who take missions from people with money or just create another sequel. Spending more personal time making everything the way you want to make the players feel and see what you want you them to alone, is maybe the best way to make a game, it can work better than big game developers. Anyway I have a feeling we're going to see more of big winning Indie games in the future.

So, Can we have a list of exeptional well done indie games, I would like to make my collection bigger.
Meh I don't have anything worth saying.

Amnesia was my big hit for 2010. Best horror game to date and they did it almost perfectly.

If you enjoy genocide, DEFCON is a keeper. It's multiplayer strategy game based on War Games. Lots of fun and up to 6 players too!

World of Goo is a great puzzle game.

Magicka for explosive magic fun and four player coop.

I know Collin really enjoyed Machinarium, another puzzle/adventure type game.

I'll add more to the list as I think of them.

You mean you haven't played the Chzo Mythos yet?

:o

Anyhoo

Warsow: Yes it's a massive Quake rip off, no you shouldn't care because the features it adds are gleeful lunatic fun. This is the game in which movement plays the strongest part. Unless you are playing instagib, in that case you are an idiot and there is little hope for you. And the art direction is simply wonderful.

Openarena: Yes it's a massive Quake rip off, no you shouldn't care because it... is Quake. Seriously. It's Quake 3 with all the assets replaced with open source alternatives making it totally free. Though I don't know if Quake Live has done much to dent the fanbase, it still is a massive hoot, with the best CTF map in any game ever, Sago's Castles.

Nexuiz: AHA, this is a massive Unreal Tournament rip off!!! ...yeah. Well it's fun, okay? The graphics are gorgeous, the action is slick with some truly ludicrous weapons, but I didn't quite get into it as much as the two above games.

I'm going to come back to this post a little later. Yes there will be games other than Rooty Tooty Point and Shooty Arena.

And now 2011 kicks off with things like Greed Corp.

I know, it looks silly and stupid but I like it...
