I think it's a role-playing thing.

If you start out good, there's not really much doubt about your past - you were one of the good guys. But if you start out in jail or something, you could take it that either you were a criminal in the past, or that you were wrongly convicted for something you didn't do.

It is cheaper, but it has nothing to do with piracy. Console publishers have to pay a licencing fee to Sony/Mircosoft, whereas the PC is an open platform.

The pirating world's soooooo profitably easy on PC's... They even sell software to emulate CD's for pirating purposes which also, ironically, gets pirated.
