My Life is Excellent, I Don't Need Personal Help...

Post by Lord_Mountbatten » 01 Jun 2011, 16:11

But sometimes I have trouble getting my various bourgeois purchases working properly.

Likely most of you won't be able to help, but I also know some of you do have internet savvy about you.

Anyways, as some know, my connection can suck at times because my estate is so large and I like to have things set up in my room, so I contacted my ISP, which sent me a new router, one which is apparently supposed to be more stable and have a larger range than the old one (it is classified as an "n" type, which means nothing to me, but apparently that means it is a Godly router).

Guess what? It works everywhere but in my room, where it has a "limited connectivity", so it basically tells me I'm connected but won't do anything at all. So yes, the supposedly lower-grade router I had beforehand was much better, because at least that actually bloody worked. Now, there's the option of buying some sort of repeater and placing it in between, but since my room is within the supposed range and I hate shelling out money because of lying ISPs (perfect business strategy though, I may try it), I'm wondering if anything else can be done. I keep getting the sneaking suspicion that there's something up with the wall in my room, because right now I'm in a different room which is further away, and the signal is strong.

Put the router nearer your room?

If the layout of your estate permits I strongly recommend a plain old ethernet cable over any kind of wireless router. They're dirt cheap and give a much better connection.

I'm too lazy and ill-informed to give my own theories.
Random Helpful Guy from Yahoo Answers wrote:A variety of devices can interfere with 802.11 network protocols.

Here are some of the most common:

1. Microwave ovens within 10 feet of access point or reciever.

2. Wireless phones. The most damaging of these are 2.4 GHz wireless phones that people are starting to use in homes and some companies. If one of these phones is in use within the same room as an 802.11b wireless LAN, then expect poor wireless LAN performance.

3. Bluetooth enabled devices, such as laptops and PDAs, will also cause performance degradations if operating in close proximately to 802.11 stations, especially if the 802.11 station is relatively far (i.e., low signal levels) from the station that it's communicating with. The 802.11 and 802.15 standards groups, however, are working on a standard that will enable the coexistence of Bluetooth and 802.11 devices.

4.Other wireless LANs, such as one that your neighbor may be operating, can cause interference unless you coordinate the selection of 802.11b channels.

On the other hand your internet drops could be caused simply by a failure on the hardware end. I doubt that one would be able to tell that there was 'nothing wrong with anything' even if one knew what to look for. Often router firmware or wireless adapters fail, and can cause erratic behavior similar to what you are describing.

You were rather unclear what you meant when you said your wi-fi signal was 'disconnecting'. Do you mean your internet connection or your router's 'bars'. You go on to say this occured while you had full bars, but no internet. That leads me to this conclusion:

What I find most likely however is there is something wrong with your internet modem that runs to the router. Or there is a problem between the modem and the router. If the signal remains unbroken (ie full bars) but internet is dropped that is almost a sure sign that your modem is not sending or receiving packets properly. This entails contacting your ISP to diagnose why this is occurring. It can be caused by a bad cable/phone connection or bad wiring, or too weak a signal. A number of things.

Routers usually have a "max connections" option as well. Make sure that that value is set to however many computers you have in the house + devices that use wireless. So, roughly 250 for you, my Lord. New devices trying to use the internet past the max value will always connect but have "limited connectivity."

You can access your router settings at http://192.168.1.1/ or http://192.168.1.0/ or http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.0.0/

If all of this advice still doesn't work, you can sometimes turn unused routers into repeaters.

If you could tell us the model and manufacturer, it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.

Might I suggest power-line Ethernet?
I (before it died, it was a first gen io-gear from ages ago) used such a system to give my computer a remote connection back when wireless was expensive. Many people use them to set-up normal routers as wifi extenders.
Just plug on into your switch and one into the router in the desired location.

Many things can interrupt a wireless signal, and it could be you have different settings between the two routers. First I'd try changing the wireless channel that the router is set to, many default to 7, try channel 1 or 11.

Maybe the wall is made out of lead and it turns out your room is a nuclear bomb shelter.

A lot of excellent advice, and I did try some of it. However, sadly what I tried didn't work, Ethernet cables would be impractical, and a repeater was bought and is on its way.
