Ignorant british person here!

Post by Wildwill002 » 01 Oct 2013, 18:22

Someone smart, preferably with a politics degree,(though optional) explain what the american government shutting down means? As far as I can tell, some people got pissy about healthcare and now people can't get into statue of liberty or summin.

I'm neither American, nor particularly knowledgeable when it comes to politics, but I do watch a lot of youtube videos. Perhaps this one will help.

It means absolutely nothing except that the stock market went up when it happened :P

The only noticeable effects are no access to public parks or monuments. Whiiich only goes to show that they should be under Charity Trust or private company leases to make them actually profitable rather than a cost for the USG

And, you know, the nearly million people who are out of work because of the shutdown. That's kind of important.

If I remember correctly, every government shutdown that has happened has resulted in backpay after it was up and running again.

There is the slight issue of Search and Rescue teams for the national parks not being able to come to work though. Which makes it a problem for the people lost in the woods right now.

And all the millions of dollars created by people with businesses near the parks.

And all the possibly soon-to-die veterans being unable to visit the memorials to the war(s) they fought in.

And the immense current strain on the 800,000 people who are neither getting payed at current, or may not, because since this is rather a larger threat lately, the Dept. of Treasury is tired of this and might not back pay for what was not actually worked for.

The video puts it well enough together. Also, instead of actually working on things, yesterday they tweeted all day about how they wish they could work on things.

And if this goes on until the 17th, then they have to talk about the American debt limit, which is suppose to run out then, and if they don't put anything towards that, then if the government owes you money in some way, it probably won't pay, or it will strip out other things it is paying for to pay that. And since everyone buys money from America, even other countries, that could harm everyone.

I think we should just remove all those in the House and disbar them from coming back.

I think it's Hungary that, if this happens, instantly orders a total reelection of their parliament.

And all of this probably wouldn't of happened if the Republicans didn't decide at the last minute to stop funding Obamacare, even though they've been fine about doing it for the what, past two to three years? Silly 'murican politics...

But only waited until now to absolutely pull the plug on it? It's a bit late for that...

They've been attempting to defund it since it's inception. It's just that now they had a way to threaten things on a larger scale.

Interestingly enough, the House passed a resolution to discuss funding, then the Senate shot it down.

Also, the Democrats pushed Obamacare through without Republican support. It's both parties' fault; they need to grow the fuck up and start talking instead of waving around threats and abusing majority power.

To be fair, it's not like Democrats and Republicans would be able to agree on Obamacare to begin with, let alone just about everything else that gets proposed to Congress...

That's my point. It's more of a "them vs us" than the people in Congress doing what THEY thing is right for the country.

Surely theres some form of fine print or something that the public can utilise to stop this sort of thing happening, and to kick the arses out?

Also on a personal note, I've always believe that those whom were born with a silver spoon in their mouth and whom go to prestigious university's shouldn't be allowed to tell the "99%" as it were what to do. Granted, theres some flaws in that logic, but I still hold true to it.
