I'm limited on what I can do with the map due to the program the generates it. It's possible I can do a conversion after the fact, I'll have to look into it. I'm doing this all on linux on the command line, not using any gui apps (no gui on the server).

try

Code: Select all

convert input_file.png -colors 256 -quality 90 -depth 8 output.png
Play around with quality/depth to find optimal values

Thanks Ojii, I know next to nothing about graphics. That dropped the size from 21meg to 9meg on the current map. Do you have any other suggestions about decreasing the size?

reducing color and depth even more (eg -colors 64 -depth 6) might make it even better. Maybe also see if gifs are lower. Or reduce quality to something like 75.

ojii, reducing further didn't make any significant decreases in size, so I think we have hit the happy medium, but its more than a 50% decrease, so all good

However, the changed.png get wonky after these are downranked, I have to rewrite things to do the change, then convert to a lower bit rate

Thanks again for all of your help, its greatly appreciated and will help everyone

updated the OP, but I've added a google api map, with zoom and it loads faster for me, hopefully it will for others too: http://wokka.org/mine/

now if there were a simple way to plug in markers, perhaps on a toggled overlay...

Just download the minimap mod - you can set waypoints and toggle them on or off to find places again.

Dup, you mean to install the minimap mod on the server? No, I looked into it, its a performance hog, especially on a bigger map with a lot of players.

As far as markers go on the google map, I could, but then there would be an issue with people changing others markers, and I don't want to get into a huge coding issue of permisions, or even mods, just not going to happen, I don't have that time or want to do it.

yeah, but I;m talking about markers, for everyone, that can be practically innumerable.

for example:
x1, z1 - Black Sheep Trading post
x2, z2 - Bobby Jo's house
0,0 - Shipwreck (spawn)

etc.
etc.

And it puts little pins/markers at those locations and you can mouse over them to see the info.

I understand what you mean Thonnas, but who maintains it, updates? The maps as they stand are as much as I'm willing to invest in with my time, right now.

That's kind of what I was eluding at in regards to streamlining it. I meant essentially make it user input. Kind of a wiki type deal.

Yeah, until someone erases another persons markers, or changes the text, we have enough squabbling going on over towns, etc, plus, I'd have to code a front end to do those markers, and its just not something I want to spend my time on.

No I meant for himself - I've found it very useful in the time I've been using it.

Yeah, I didn't think so. Was just a thought.

Have you guys considered having a community wiki?
Then you could do something like this:
http://www.atitd.org/wiki/tale5/Guilds/ARC

(I know, the whole griefing thing, but you could register wiki account through an in game command, thereby tying minecraft accounts to wiki accounts, so people can't anonymously jack up other peoples pages without consequence.)

Just a(n other) though.

Oh man, nice work with the API map Wokka!

This is a dynamic map, right? It'll update as the game world saves?

If so, does it display player positions? The APIs I've looked into support player icons on the map, I was just wondering. Map markers would also be nice, but I understand if you're not willing to invest that much effort in labelling everything.

Come to think of it, I think there was a plugin for that, in some shape or form, that allows one to add labels to map via an in-game command, '/addlabel' or something... Imma look it up now.

Found it, I was thinking of this:
http://forum.hey0.net/showthread.php?ti ... hlight=map

Supports player positions and in-game map marking commands. If you're using this already, then awesome! If not, perhaps you could give it a look, see if it's viable? Thanks, keep up the good work! :)

Not dynamic, this map is generated once a day. That plugin looks nice, but its too much load on a busy server, so, sorry, we won't be loading it right now.

Wow. That is impressive. Especially that you can see just how many others have made towns, and how spread out they are. Thanks for this Sneak!

I do have a question that has been bugging me for a while when I first came across the signs Milo, why is it the Royal Sheep Trading Post? I thought when I saw the signs that someone had a fence-off area full of sheep and people were trading cloth or something...
I'm smart, really!

Well, instead of say Royal British its Royal Sheep. Kind of based on the idea of a frontier colony/trading post that would be set up in Canada back in the old days.

The google map generation is hanging every morning, I've had to disable it. I'll be out of town this weekend, so doubt I'll have time to look at it before then. I'll work on it next week.

The large static maps are still updating normally.

No luck today either wokka, it's still sitting there not doing nothing. Didn't know how to disable it though. Seems to affect certain in game commands too?

back to the drawing board. The good news, it doesn't seem to be your old fire temple area causing it.

It should not affect any other comamnds
